John 14:22-26 (ESVST)
Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “ Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “ If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
Jesus just indicated in verse 21 that he will manifest himself to anyone that keeps his commandments. Hence Judas is asking him how he will manifest himself to them but not the world. Jesus once more indicates that keeping his word, is proof that someone loves him. If anyone loves him, it will show in his keeping of his word. Again, this does not mean that you need to keep Jesus’s word in order to love him. Keeping Jesus’s word is not a condition that must be met before one can love Jesus. Actually, loving Jesus results in one keeping his word.
Jesus says, if anyone keeps his word, God will love that person and both God and Jesus will come and make their home with that person. This I believe refers to the Holy Spirit which is currently among the believers which will in future be in the believers. So, through the Holy Spirit which will dwell in those that show that they love Jesus by keeping his word.
Therefore, if anyone loves Jesus and he shows it by keeping his word, Jesus and God will manifest themselves by giving that person the Holy Spirit that will make its home in that person’s heart. So, the answer Jesus gives to judas is that I will manifest myself through the Holy Spirit.
24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father ‘s who sent me.
Jesus then told them that if a person does not love him, then they don’t keep his word. Again here as you can see, Jesus does not say if you don’t keep my words, you don’t love me. Rather he says, if you don’t love me, you don’t keep my words. Loving Jesus comes first and then keeping of the words comes after.
25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
Jesus then told them that the Holy Spirit, who will be send by God in his name and who will come as a helper or advocate or counsellor, will teach them all things and will make them remember everything that Jesus told them. This answers a question of how did the Apostles who wrote the books in the bible, remember everything that Jesus said or did when they were writing. Now we know why.
