Redeemed by the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ
7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us,
Word Study: Redemption, greek word “apolytrosis” which means literally an action of buying back of a slave or captive through payment of a ransom. Figuratively it means to rescue from sin. Trespass, greek word “paraptoma” which means a deviation from living according to what has been revealed as the right way to live, a false step, basic meaning is to fall down. Lavished, greek word “perisseuo” which means to be superabundant, to provide superabundantly, excessive.
Comment: Another spiritual blessing that we have received from God in Jesus Christ is the redemption through His blood. When Jesus died on the cross and shed His blood, He was literally paying a ransom for us. Romans 6:16-20, indicates that we were once slaves to sin and Romans 6:22 specifically states that we have been set free from sin. This is exactly what Jesus did on the cross. We who were once slaves of sin were bought back through the payment of a ransom. We were rescued from sin through the blood of Jesus. His death was the payment of the ransom required to free us and now we are free. This is what redemption through His blood means.
Not only that but we were also forgiven of our trespasses. Eph 2:1 says that we were dead in our trespasses and sins in which we once walked. This means we used to live a life not according to the standard of God. Romans 3:23 says that all of us have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. This means all of us have not lived according to the standard of living that God has commanded us. We have fallen short of the required standard and for all of that, in Jesus Christ, when He died on the cross, we received forgiveness of all that we did in the past, present and future which was and will not be in line with the standard of God.
So, when Jesus died on the cross, we who were once slaves to sin, were bought back, a ransom was paid and we were forgiven of our sins and trespasses. Amen.
We did not receive all this because we deserved it as some kind of a reward but, rather it was by grace that we received it and according to Eph 2:8-9 and Rom 3:23-24, it was a gift from God. It was not out of our good behavior that God decided to pay ransom and forgive us but, it was by God’s grace. Col 1:13-14 indicates clearly that it was God who delivered or rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the Kingdom of His beloved Son Jesus Christ, and God did this through the redemption and forgiveness that is in Jesus Christ.
Romans 3:23-24, Col 1:13-14 and our current verse, all have the same message and the message is that we are all sinners, and God by His grace rescued us, bought us back by the blood of Jesus Christ out of the domain of darkness that we were once slaves to, and forgave us all our sins. All this was a gift from God that we did not deserve. Amen.
This grace that we received from God was lavished upon us, in other words, it was super poured over us. God poured out His grace upon us in superabundance. There is no shortage of grace and therefore there is no sin big enough not to be covered by God grace.
in all wisdom and insight9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
Word Study: Insight, greek word “phronesis” which relates to the action of thinking, the way of thinking, the ability, skill or carefulness to govern one’s own life wisely or one’s own resources wisely. Wisdom, greek word “sophia” which means intelligence, understanding. Wisdom is intelligence and Insight is the ability to apply the intelligence wisely and carefully
Comment: Another spiritual blessing that we have received in Jesus is the understanding or knowledge and the ability to put in practice or apply the understanding or knowledge gained and, one of those understandings was the revelation to us of the mystery of God’s will or desire which is according to His plans. This plan is that when the time comes, God will unite all things in heaven and on earth under Jesus Christ. Phill 2:9-11 says all things in heaven, on earth and under earth has indeed been placed under Jesus and Jesus has been given the name, such that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow down. Col 1:16 says that all things were created through Jesus and for Jesus. This wisdom and insight, this knowledge and the ability to understand this knowledge was given to us in Jesus Christ.
