John 14:15-21 – If you love me, keep my commandments!

John 14:15-21 (ESVST)
15 “ If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

Verse 15 and 16 are linked by the word “and” in verse 16 . This shows that verse 16 is a continuation from verse 15. Verse 16 will only happen if 15 happens. As indicated in my previous message on verse 15, verse 15 can be read as “to show that you love me, keep my commandments”. For further explanation, please read my previous message on verse 15.

So, to show that you love me, keep my commandment. Only if you have shown that you love me by keeping my commandments, only then will I ask my Father(God) to send you a helper, comforter, counsellor or advocate, who will be with you forever. This helper is the Holy Spirit. This Holy Spirit, the world cannot recieve why, because the world cannot see him and does not know him.
1 Corinthians 2:14 (ESVST)
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
The world cannot recieve him and does not know him because the natural person simply does not accept the things of the Spirit of God. He does not, it is not in him. The things of the Spirit of God are foolishness to him. He is not able to understand them because they are spiritually hidden from him. Unless God opens his heart and eyes and ears, he will never be able to recieve and know the Holy Spirit. But, Jesus told his disciples that as for you, you do know him. Simply meaning that as for you my disciples, your hearts and eyes have been opened and you are able to recieve and know the Holy Spirit and not only that, the Holy Spirit currently lives around you and with you and later on in future, reffering to Pentecost, this same Holy Spirit, will live in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

Jesus continues to comfort and give assurance to his disciples whom he is about to leave behind on earth. Jesus tells them that they should not be troubled for he will not leave them as orphans. They will have a comforter in the Holy Spirit and he also will come to them. Just for a while, the world will no longer see him but they will. Jesus here means that since the world has rejected him, they will no longer be able to see him for where he is going, they cannot come.
John 8:21-24 (ESVST)
So he said to them again, “ I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘ Where I am going, you cannot come ’?” 23 He said to them, “ You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”
Jesus is going back to God in heaven and unless the world beleives in him like his disciples, they cannot follow him but the disciples can. That is why he says the world will no longer see him. Jesus continues to tell them that because he lives, so will they also live. Jesus tells them that on that day, meaning the day they will meet with him in heaven, they will know that he is in the Father, them I’m him and him in them. Meaning that they will know that they are all one with the Father.

21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

Jesus here agains states that he who keeps his commandments, shows that he loves him and the one who loves him, will also be loved by God and he will also love him and reviel himself to him.
