John 16:25-33 (ESV Strong’s Bible)
25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father.
Jesus said “I have said these things to you” at the beginning of chapter 16. So, I think in saying the same thing once more here, indicates that He is reffering to everything he said since the beginning of chapter 16. Again Jesus refers to the hour that is coming, meaning the time is coming. Jesus told them that the time was coming when he will no longer speak to them in figures of speech but, He will speak to them plainly. This I beleive is when the disciples would have recieved the Holy Spirit. Jesus did mention that when the Holy Spirit comes, He will tell them all truth and will tell them what He hears. Jesus will speak to his disciples through the Holy Spirit and tell them plainly about God.
26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
Jesus indicates that on that day, I beleive here He is referring to when the disciples have recieved the Holy Spirit, He says on that day, they will ask God in His name. Jesus is saying that it is not as if He will be asking God on the behalf of the disciples because He will be with God but, the disciples will have direct communication with God because God loves them since they loved Him and beleived that He was from God.
28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”
Jesus then told them that He comes from God and came into the world and now He is leaving the world and going back to God.
29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech!
This is pretty much what Jesus is being telling them all along but they could not understand it. So, here Jesus gives them, I suppose, a taste of what it will be like for them on the day He starts to speak to them plainly.
30 Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.”
Finally the disciples were delighted to understand Jesus and confirmed that now they know that He knows all things and no one should really be questioning him. This is in the sense of disputing what He says.
31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.
To me Jesus here says in a nudshell “really! Do you now beleive?” Meaning that although they said they beleived because they now understood, they had understood nothing yet because, the time is coming and it is here when they would be scattered, each one to his own house and leaving Him alone. This to me highlights that Jesus was saying, until you have received the Holy Spirit, your understanding is limited and you will not be able to withstand what is about to happen. Then He told them that, even though you will leave me alone, I will not be alone but I will be with God.
33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
Jesus then again comforts and strengthens them by telling them that, He has told them these things so that they may have peace in Him, find peace in Him for in the world, they will only find tribulations. What must give them peace is that, they must know that He has overcome the world.
